The Best of 2014

I’m pleased to announce that today on the blog, I’d like to share with you some never-before seen snaps in a post I like to call… “The Best of 2014.” What’s that you say? It’s the dead middle of the year & most photographers have these sorts of things cued up to go out at the very least by end of January? Hushhhhhh...

As some of you may already know, if I had time for a traditional hobby like a normal person… it would be photography. I fell in love with photography in fall of 2008 while in Mexico on my high school’s bi-yearly Junior & Senior class mission trip. The sights were unlike any I had seen before, & equipped with the sorriest point & shoot you’ve ever seen… well let’s just say I thought I was pretty hot stuff. That Christmas, my parents spoiled me with my first dslr: a Canon Rebel XSI.

From that day on, I was hooked. In my first couple years photographing, I obviously had no conscious idea of (or conscience about)  what I was doing & took some of the most hideous, ridiculous, & cliched photographs our generation has ever seen. I mean, what was I supposed to do? I was self-taught teenager trying to channel my raging hormones into something productive for crying out loud!

Thankfully for humanity, 2 solid years of practice & further education eventually began to show a glimmer of hope that I might contribute more than flower close-ups, atrociously lit portraits & disgustingly over-vignetted pictures of god-knows-what to society. After I started to take on commercial work, I decided to “invest” (was able to justify to myself) in purchasing my current baby (& probably forever baby, since that sucker was expensive)--my trusty Canon Mark 5D ii.

Over the past 7 years, I’ve had the pleasure of taking what I’m sure are millions of photographs, or as I like to call them--the single-frame moments of life. I’ve been lucky enough to do a decent amount of commercial work, and have some of the best clients a photographer could ever ask for! However, due to my constantly busy schedule, my personal work always comes in dead last on my edit roster. I mean, right Samantha… but how dead last? You must be backed up a few months or so… right?

Ha. Ha. Ha.

Let’s try… a year & a half.

I know, I know, you’re awestruck & immeasurably impressed by my dedication to prioritizing work over everyone & everything (including my own personal sanity projects) right? Right?! Well, as I’m sure you intelligent folks can all imagine… it’s not always all it’s cracked up to be--and I don’t suggest you try it at home. However, I do have to say that now that I’ve taken the time to plow through the mountain of outstanding personal photos… it has given me yet another opportunity to appreciate how richly laden my life is with love.

Here’s to another year of making memories & improving (hopefully) my priorities!

Cheers,
